Pear Shape Diamond
Pear shape diamonds are the combination cuts of round and marquise shapes. Technically pear shaped diamonds are considered to be a modification of the round brilliant cut diamonds. Due to their shape they are also called tear drop diamonds.
Pear shape diamonds generally have 58 facets patterns. However they can be cut in different numbers of pavilion, mainly 6, 7, 8 or 4 facets. Half of the facets are round or oval shaped and the other half is very much like to a marquise shape with sides narrowing to a point.
The length to width ratio for the pear cut diamond shape is a matter of personal preference and taste. Pear shape diamonds are not only used for engagement rings but they are a popular shape for pendants, necklaces and dangle earrings. For dangle earrings narrow pear cut shapes are mostly favored.
The traditional pear shape has the length to width ratio between 1.45 and 1.75.
A lack of girdle thickness would create durability issues and an extra thickness on girdle can cause setting problems hiding the weight below the girdle. Therefore before purchasing your pear cut shape diamond consider checking its width and length properties or consult with one of iBraggiotti Fine Jewelry specialists.
Pear diamond shape rings are worn with the narrow end pointing the hand of the person wearing it. Just like the oval and marquise cut diamonds, pear diamonds have a selection of wide and slim cuts. A longer pear cut shape engagement ring will certainly create slightly slim look and will make the wears finger appear longer.
Pear shape diamonds have a very good symmetry. The upper and the lower side curves of the diamonds are symmetrical with no straight edges. The top looks like a semi circle. Make sure that your setting has a prong at the point, where it is most likely for chipping since it’s the nearest outer edge of the rough diamond. This would be the location where you may observe inclusions, if any. However as the setting will have a prong at this point it won’t be visible to the eye once the diamond would be set.
It is a fact that pear diamond engagement rings have a unique impression and attraction since they have a very distinguished look from the other commonly used shapes.
