Princess Cut Diamond
The princess cut style diamond has a typical square or rectangular shape in appearance with sharp, pointed corners. They are the second most popular shapes for diamonds after the round cut diamonds. The profile view of the princess cut shape is just like an upturned pyramid with four sides.
The princess cut consists of 58 facets; 21 crown, 4 girdles and 33 pavilions. Depending on its pavilion cut it may also have only 50 facets; 21 crown, 4 girdles and 25 pavilions. The ideal length to width ratio of a princess cut square is between 1 and 1.05, and for a rectangular princess cut the ratio is greater than 1.10.
Princess cut diamond is considered to be having a traditional diamond shape just like the round diamonds in many occasions. They are a little more inexpensive than the round cut diamonds. Cutting the princess cut shape yields about %60-63 weight of rough crystal. This is higher weight preservation than the round diamonds obtain. Same carat weights of two shapes, for instance round and princess cut diamonds, contain different percentages of rough diamonds. The princes cut retains estimated %80 where the round diamond cut retain only projected %50 of rough diamond. Retaining more crystal weights makes the square princess cut one of the most popular cuts among the other shapes. Princess cut diamonds which have high yield in weight have lower prices compared to the round diamonds.
The Princess cut reflects a high degree of light return with its characteristic square shape. However, they are likely to obtain small sizes because of their upturned pyramid shape. Most of their weight is in their pavilion. A princess cut diamond must always be set with prongs protecting the four corners, since the corners are the most likely location for chipping.
You may observe the inclusions and extra facets mostly on the outer edge corners of a princess cut. It is hard to recognize them since mostly are covered with V shaped prong, therefore they are usually not visible to eye. Generally speaking we can say that their flaws are more invisible and acceptable.
Among all the square cuts, princess cut is the closest in achieving the brilliance of a round diamond, more over they do have a competitive price value. Princess cut diamonds are great choices of engagement rings. They are always in high demand due to their unusual looks and exquisite shape. They are designed to have the top brilliance and show up their clarity.
