Round Diamonds
Round Diamonds are also called Brilliant Cut Diamonds. Among all the other diamond shapes round diamonds are the most popular and most desired ones in the market. They pioneer the industry with more than %75 of diamond sales today.
The Round Diamonds have a cone shape to maximize the return of the light from bottom through the top of the diamond. Including the cutlet they have 58 facets. 33 of the facets are located in the crown, the upper part of the diamond, containing 8 bezel, 8 star, 1 table and 16 upper girdle facets. On the other hand the diamond on the bottom part, so called pavilion holds 25 facets; 16 lower girdle facets, 8 main facets and 1 culet. The pavilion at the bottom reaches to a point where it does not have a culet.
Diamonds cutters, throughout years have experienced and studied advanced theories of the behavior of the light and become skilled making precise mathematical calculations to optimize the fire of the round shape diamonds. Due to its popularity and high demand, round diamonds are well stocked in stores in a great number of varieties in terms of flexible cost and qualities.
Round Diamond - The Cut
One of the most important facts to show a round diamonds beauty is its cut. Here what we mean by the cut it not the shape of the diamond itself; but its symmetry, angle proportions and the polishing. During your research you will also realize that the there is only a least amount of price difference when it comes choosing the cut, especially comparing to the other important 4’C (Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut) facts.
Diamonds are beautiful with their sparkle and brilliance, and what makes them shine is the reflection of the light that goes through from the bottom to the top. In order to reflect an optimized reflection the angles needs to be perfectly cut in proportion. An ideal cut will produce much sparkle and brilliance. On a well proportioned diamonds, all facets should be uniform and symmetrical. Most of the diamonds on the market are not sufficiently proportioned. While choosing the cut of your diamond, make sure to check the table and the depth percentage of the diamond.
The table width divided by the diamond width will give you the table percentage. The table will look bigger and smaller according to this percentage. A good table percentage for round diamonds would be around %53-%59. Bigger size diameter and smaller table percentage are generally the most desired round diamonds. To check the depth percentage for the diamond, divide the depth by the width of the diamond. As the depth percentage increase the stone will began to look poorer. A good depth percentage for round diamonds would be around %59-%62.5. Round diamonds mostly do not have ideal circles. While choosing your cut to have a simple indication make sure that the length of the diamond is not greater than the width by more than .10mm. This would mean that the diamond has not been cut well. You should avoid purchasing that diamond. For more than 2 carat stone this difference is acceptable until .12mm.
Hearts and Arrows
The heart and arrows is the visual effect that is being attained with a perfect symmetry and angle of a diamond. Top view shows eight uniform arrows and bottom view shows eight perfectly symmetrical hearts.
Hearts and Arrow patterns in a diamond can only be viewed with a light directing viewer, Fire Scoop. It is a device which enables to analyze the symmetry, contrast and the alignment of facets of a diamond. It takes up to four times longer to obtain the right cut to have the heart and arrows pattern in a diamond. They have the utmost sparkle, brilliance, perfection and beauty.
You shouldn’t underestimate the importance of choosing the cut for your diamond since it will have a great impact on your diamonds good looks.
